Many of us dream of doing something truly significant during our lifetime, but we stop short with the thought that one person can't really make a difference.
We believe it is possible. This year we decided to dream really big and do something special for Christmas.
Creative Financial Strategy
Financial planning focuses on using your resources strategically and effectively to achieve your goals. We decided to apply the same knowledge we employ every day on your behalf towards a group of children that does not enjoy the same opportunities that ours do.
My family has sponsored 4 children through Plan Canada for the last 7 years. We took a trip to Kenya and Tanzania recently and were fortunate enough to meet with one of these families. We were welcomed into their home and given a tour of nearby schools that Plan Canada had built with the help of donors. The whole experience was amazing. Despite what some might think, the people are not destitute and in despair - they are full of energy, generosity and hope. What they need are resources and training to help give them a chance at a better future.
Plan Canada works in 69 countries around the globe, including 50 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas. Their primary goal is to give children, families and communities the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty and build sustainable solutions for improving their own lives. Our team wanted to help!
We learned that if we could raise $10,000, then governments, foundations and organizational donors would match our donation at a 6:1 ratio, adding another $60,000.
We also realized we could probably achieve our goal by donating $2,500, then asking a few of the companies we work with to match our donation. Happily Dynamic Funds, Picton Mahoney Asset Management and Antrim Investments all responded enthusiastically when we outlined our vision. The result: our $2,500 donation triggered a cascade that will result in a $70,000 school being built in Cambodia!
The gift of education helps by giving a hand up as opposed to a handout.
This year, Plan Canada is hoping to build four schools in remote areas of Cambodia, where children are often forced to drop out because the local school doesn’t offer their grade, or is simply too far away from their home.
Our school will have a library, six large classrooms, school essentials, and be able to accommodate children with disabilities. Playgrounds will provide a safe place for children to play (away from the land mines still buried in the countryside). Separate washrooms for boys and girls will ensure privacy and reduce the risk of harassment, helping to keep girls in school. New teachers’ residences will attract qualified instructors and minimize teacher absenteeism.
